What is PALLAS™ and
PALLAS PREMIUM™?
PALLAS™ & PALLAS Premium™ by LASEROPTEK are novel solid-state, U.S. FDA-cleared dermatology lasers that address inflammatory skin conditions such as vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and leukoderma. These skin conditions produce chronic discomfort, often leaving people feeling self-conscious of their appearance. PALLAS™ Laser Therapy treatments are drug-free, safe, and comfortable, quickly helping you feel and look like you again.
The origins of phototherapy for skin conditions date back thousands of years and have roots in ancient medicine, especially in Egypt and India. Over time, advancements in scientific understanding led to the modern, targeted forms of phototherapy used in dermatology.
The first recorded use of phototherapy (heliotherapy) appears around 1400 BCE in Egypt, where sun exposure was combined with plant extracts to treat vitiligo, a skin condition that causes patches of pigment loss.
In the late 19th century, Danish physician Niels Finsen pioneered modern phototherapy studying effects of specific wavelengths of light on skin. He used UV light to treat lupus vulgaris (a skin manifestation of tuberculosis), and his success led to his receiving the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1903. His work led the foundation for therapeutic use of UV light in dermatology.
During the 20th century, ultraviolet light (UV) therapy was refined and standardized. Broad-band UVB (290-320nm) became widely used in the mid-20th century for psoriasis and other inflammatory skin diseases. The therapy was found to reduce inflammation and slow the abnormal growth of skin cells associated with psoriasis.
In the 1980’s scientists discovered that narrowband UVB (311-313 nm) was especially effective for treating skin disorders with fewer side effects compared to broadband UVB which emits a wider range of wavelengths (290-320nm) exposing skin to more potentially harmful UV radiation. Narrowband UVB is still a common treatment for psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, and other inflammatory skin conditions, as it provides a more targeted wavelength of light typically around 311nm which has been found to be particularly effective in treating psoriasis, vitiligo and other inflammatory skin conditions.
The late 1990’s and early 2000s saw the development of targeted phototherapy devices, like excimer lasers (308nm). Today, targeted laser phototherapy has further evolved with modern UVB lasers delivering precise control over wavelength, intensity, and treatment area, making therapies safer and more tailored to individual patient needs. Solid-state UVB lasers like the PALLAS™ systems represent the latest advancements, generating monochromatic, collimated, and coherent light at either 308nm or 311nm that targets only affected skin, reflecting the culmination of centuries of knowledge combined with cutting-edge solid-state laser technology.
